Venasque Gorge

From our cottage on the outskirts of Isle Sur le Sorge we took the rental car for a trip through the gorge of the Venasque River. The whole area is huge uplifted block of Limestone, that makes fanatastic gorges and caves. The road through the gorge looks like something out of the "Road Runner"cartoons with tunnels around bluffs. Here is a picture of Guy and I at the summit of the road. Guy is too interested in the big drop off behind us to look at his mum taking the photo. In the background you can see some caves in the bluff, this is the area of Southern France where they uncovered a lot of prehistoric remains, yep the veritable home of the Caveman, I felt strangely at home!
Then we drove on across the plateau to Sault, the centre of the lavender growing district. The lavender wasn't quite in bloom yet but it is still magnificent country, and there were fields of poppys, even Guy was impressed!
